  • The Chain Of Smiles

    The Chain Of Smiles

One day, Miss Ellis gave her pupils a new assignment: an assignment on happiness. Her pupils would be “happiness collectors”, and were to see what would happen when they tried to bring happiness to those around them. As part of their assignment, all the students did really delightful, wonderful things, but what Carla Chalmers did left everyone gobsmacked. Several days after the assignment had been handed out, Carla turned up carrying a big sack. “Here in this bag I have all the happiness I’ve collected so far,” she said, smiling. On seeing this, everyone was filled with expectation, but Carla didn’t want to show anyone what was in the sack. Instead, she pulled out a small box and gave it to her teacher. When Miss Ellis had taken the box, Carla took an instant camera out of her own pocket and stood with it at the ready. “Open it, Miss Ellis.” The teacher slowly opened the box and looked inside. A big smile shone on her face, and at that moment Carla snapped a photo. Carla’s photo popped out the camera, and she offered it to Miss Ellis along with a sheet of paper. The teacher read the paper in silence, and when she had finished she gestured over at the sack. “Oh, so it’s….” “Yes!” interrupted Carla, undoing the knot which sealed the sack, “It’s a great big pile of smiles!” She opened the sack and hundreds of photos fell out, all of different smiles, each one of them beautiful. The rest of the class tried to work out how Carla had managed to create such a great big chain of happiness. All there was in the box was a photo of a big smile. But everyone who had seen it had felt happiness being transmitted to them, and in return, without even thinking about it, every person had responded with a smile of their own. With all her classmates now smiling, Carla took a photo of each one of them. She gave them their own photo along with a slip of paper, which asked them to do the same with other people, and to send a copy of the photos to her home address. And for months afterwards, Carla’s post box was always full to the brim with photos of happy, smiling people. And so it was that she managed to spread understanding of the simple truth that every time you smile you are sending a gift to the world.

  • Princess Of Fire

    Princess Of Fire

There was once and incredibly rich, beautiful, and wise Princess. Tired of false suitors who were only interested in her money, she announced that she would only marry whoever managed to present her with the most valuable, tender, and sincere gift of all. The palace filled up with flowers and gifts of every kind, letters describing undying love, and love-struck poems. Among all these wonderful gifts, she found a pebble, a simple dirty pebble. Intrigued, she demanded to see whoever it was who had offered this gift. Despite her curiosity, she pretended to be highly offended by the gift when the young man was brought before her. He explained it to her like this, “Dear Princess, this pebble represents the most valuable thing one can give – it is my heart. It is also sincere, because it is not yet yours, and it is as hard as a stone. Only when it fills with love will it soften and be more tender than any other.” The young man quietly left, leaving the Princess surprised and captivated. She fell so in love that she took the little pebble with her wherever she went, and for months she regaled the young man with gifts and attention. But his heart remained as hard as the stone in her hands. Losing hope, she ended up throwing the pebble into a fire. In the heat of the fire, the sand crumbled from around it, and from out of that rough stone a beautiful golden figure emerged. With this, the Princess understood that she herself would have to be like the fire, and go about separating what is useless from what is truly important. During the following months she set about changing the kingdom, and devoted her life, her wisdom, and her riches to separating what is truly valuable from what is unimportant. She gave up the luxury, the jewels, the excess; and it meant that everyone in the kingdom now had food to eat and books to read. So many people came away from their interaction with the Princess enchanted by her character and her charisma. Her mere presence transmitted such human warmth that they started to call her ‘The Princess of Fire’. And as with the pebble, the fire of her presence melted the hardness of the young man’s heart. And just as he had promised, he became so tender and considerate that he made the Princess happy till the end of her days.

  • The Poor Bunnys Magic Present

    The Poor Bunnys Magic Present

Once upon a time there was a place where animals were suffering greatly from drought and hunger. A very poor bunny was walking sadly through the fields when, all of a sudden, a wizard appeared in front of him. The wizard offered the bunny a bag filled with little bouquets of flowers. “They are magical, and they’re even more magical if you know how to use them properly”, said the wizard. The bunny was dying of hunger, but he decided not to eat the bouquets. He wanted to put them to good use. On his way home, the bunny met a very old and very poor sheep who could hardly walk any more. “Can you spare me something?” asked the sheep. The bunny had nothing except his bouquets, and since they were magical, he was reluctant to give them to the sheep. But he remembered how his parents had always taught him to share everything; so he pulled a bouquet out of the bag and gave it to the sheep. As soon as he did this, the bunch shone with a thousand colours. Magic was at work. The bunny continued on his way, feeling both happy and a bit annoyed. He had given away one of the bouquets, but at the same time it was obvious that the sheep needed it more than he did. As he continued his journey, the very same thing happened to the bunny when he met a blind duck and then a lame cockerel. When the bunny arrived home, he had only one magical bouquet left. He told his parents all about what had happened with the wizard, and his parents were very proud of the bunny’s behaviour. He was about to pull out the final bouquet, when his little brother arrived home, crying with hunger. The bunny gave his brother the magical bouquet. At that moment, with a great rumble of thunder, the wizard appeared again. He asked the bunny “Where are the magical bouquets I gave you? What have you done with them?” The bunny was frightened and he started to apologise. But the wizard interrupted, saying “Didn’t I tell you that if you used them well they’d be even more magical? Well, go outside and see what you’ve done!” The bunny went out, shaking. And what he saw was that, thanks to the way he had used his magical bouquets, for as far as the eye could see the whole countryside had turned into wonderful, green farmland. Farmland with enough water and food to feed all the animals! And the bunny felt very happy that he had acted as he had, and that the magic of his generosity would bring happiness to everyone.

  • The Booboo Monkeys

    The Booboo Monkeys

There once was a strange jungle full of boobuan monkeys. Boobuans were some monkeys with long arms and short legs, who spent all the time to adorn their arms and brightly colored bracelets. They were often visited by Mambo the macaque, carrying his cart full of bracelets and rare things. In one of his visits, appeared with incredible enormous and shiny bracelets, the most beautiful he had ever taken. And also the most expensive, because never before the price had been so high. All boobuans but the cautios Nico, ran around to get enough bananas to pay for thier bracelets. Being so expensive, they had to be the best ones. But Nico, who was keeping bananas if ever required in the future, and that often doubted whether all those bracelets serve for something, he thought they were too expensive. But as he did not want to miss the visit of Mambo, looked among its rare things for something interesting, finding a box full of strange twists irons. “They are useless, Nico,” the seller told Nico, “you can keep them for a couple bananas.” Thus, Mambo was having sold their bracelets, leaving boobuans happy and smiling. But soon they began to realize that applied those bracelets, so broad and elongated, left no move either arm, and was a real challenge to do what is most important thing in the life of a boobuan: taking bananas. They tried taking off the bracelets, but could not. And then it turned out that everyone wanted bananas from Nico, which were the only ones across the jungle that were not in the trees. Thus, overnight, Nico became the richest and most respected boobuan in the jungle. But there was not the thing. That box of rare twisted irons Nico found as interesting and cheap, proved to be a toolbox, and when Nico discovered its many utilities, not only was able to release other bubuans of those stupid bracelets, but they found plenty of ways to use them to achieve amazing things. And that was how, thanks to the wisdom of Nico, boobuans realized that the price of things has nothing to do with its actual value, and that getting carried away by the fads and other messages of the sellers is a sure way to end up with problems.

  • The Creature In The Attic

    The Creature In The Attic

The first anyone heard about the creature in the attic was after one of the children went up there to look for an old book. Everything was dark, but between the shadows, the boy could clearly see two eyes watching him intently from above, with a horrific expression on its face. They were big eyes, about a metre apart, giving some idea of the size of that terrible being’s head. The boy yelled with every bit of air in his lungs, ran out, and locked the door, leaving the monster in the attic, growling to himself. For the next two days the people in that village were living in terror. The growls from the attic and the beating on the attic door continued, and news of the blighter’s cruel nature spread across the land. The disgraceful behaviour only got worse, but no one was brave enough to go up to that attic and confront the beast. Before long, a Norwegian fisherman passed by. Some days earlier his whaling ship had sunk, and this fellow seemed like a formidable old sea dog; a hard character indeed. Some men in the village asked him to help them confront the awful creature. The Norwegian did not hesitate to help, in return for a little money, but when he approached the attic and heard the growls of the monster, his expression changed and he went downstairs to ask for a lot more money. He also asked for some tools, a big net, and a cart. If he was to triumph against the beast, he wanted to take it away, as a trophy. All the village folk were gathered around, and watched as the Norwegian opened the attic door, and went inside, to be met by deep, shuddering growls. After the fisherman had been inside for a short while the noises stopped. Never again would the villagers see the Norwegian, or hear the sounds of the beast. Neither did anyone ever dare to go up to the attic again. Do you want to know what happened behind that door? Are you sure? Well, when the Norwegian opened the door, he could see the eye of Olaf, his enormous and fierce helmsman. The eye was also reflected in a mirror, giving the impression of both belonging to the same head. Olaf’s other eye had been covered by a patch for years. Both men continued talking in cries, in their own language, as the whaler told his imprisoned friend that the nervous villagers had given him so much money that they would be able to return and take another ship to carry on fishing. Together they managed to find a way to escape the attic, get to the cart, and disappear forever. And so it was, that fear, and fear alone, impoverished that whole village and enabled the fishermen to recover. And so it happens to this very day. Senseless fear drives us to foolishness, and often allows others to take advantage of us.
